* School Poem - The Bottom Line
* Class Poem - If
* Daily Poem - I came to school to learn
Poems and songs are part of our daily routine at Rolling Hills. In the 5th grade, I use poems and songs as a way of teaching you; but, I also use poems and songs as a way to transition from one activity to the next. For example, every day, you will enter the classroom saying the daily poem "I came to school to learn" and class poem "IF". You are not to talk to your classmates, you are not to come tell me things or ask me questions...it is our routine to have you simply enter the room and begin saying the class poem. You have the time that it takes to say these two poems to get your bag and jacket hung up properly, move your attendance clip, find your seat, sit down and be ready to begin the day. By the time the class poem is completed (which takes about 4 minutes) everyone should be seated quietly.
THEN, if you have questions for me, you will raise your hand, wait to be called on and ask away. One thing about questions is that usually...if YOU have a question about something...there is somebody else with the same question. This way, everyone hears the question as well as the answer. It is organized and time efficient.

SCHOOL POEM
THE BOTTOM LINE - Keith Kennedy - FACE IT, nobody owes you a living. What you achieve, or fail to achieve in your lifetime Is directly related to what you do or fail to do. No one chooses his parent or childhood, But you can choose your own direction. Everyone has problems and obstacles to overcome, But that too is relative to each individual. NOTHING IS CARVED IN STONE! You can change anything in your life If you want to badly enough. Excuses are for losers! Those who take responsibility for their actions Are the real winners in life. Winners meet life challenges head on Knowing there are NO guarantees, and give it all they've got And never think it's too late or too early to begin. Time plays no favorites And will pass whether you act or not Take control of your LIFE Dare to Dream and take risks....... Compete! If you aren't willing to work for your goals Don't expect others to. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! |
CLASS POEM
IF - Rudyard Kipling - If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream---and not make dreams your master; If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same:. If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son! |
DAILY POEM
I CAME TO SCHOOL TO LEARN - unknown - I will act in such a way that I will be proud of myself and others will be proud of me too. I came to school to learn and I will learn. I will have a GREAT day! |
Other Songs that we sing on a regular basis are:
* Preamble song
* Bill of Rights song
* I'm just a Bill
* States and Capitals Rap song
* Fifty Nifty (states song)
* Gettysburg Address
*Layers of the Earth
We do many more throughout the school year, but these are some of the main ones. I either hand out the words to each song or display them on the board for all students to see so that we may all learn the words...and eventually...we don't need the words or even the music to just sing away our hearts and minds! It's fun if you make it fun. I highly recommend that you choose your attitude and choose to make all of this singing fun. I do realize that some of you may not like to sing. Don't worry...I will never ask you to sing by yourself, and...none of you could possibly be a worse singer than I am! :-)
