READING HOMEWORK
- For reading homework, you will be asked to read outside of school and maintain a reading log that will be turned in once a week.
- You must have an adult sign off that you did the reading. It may be any book that you choose, but I WILL also be assigning you to read from our literature class at home on your own as well.
- You must write the name of the book and author on your reading log.
- These logs are checked on MONDAYS...I don’t care when you do your reading, or how you do your reading as long as you are reading for a total of two hours per week (7 days) and logging the time. So… you could read for two hours on any given night and be done for the week, or you could read a little bit every night of the week. It is entirely up to you. “JUST DO IT”.
Literature:
We will be reading novels together and independently. I have over 15 different titles to choose from that are all in the grade level of 4/5/6. I will announce in the newsletter which books we will be reading together for our literature portion of Reading class. If you have any suggestions for titles I should consider adding to the list please let me know.
In addition to the books we will read together as a class. I highly encourage you to choose books of your own desire to read for your enjoyment outside of school. We will take some time out of Reading class, once a week, to go to the school library. I also have a good collection of books in the 5th grade classroom that you may check out, and of course, you can always go to the public library or a book store.

Reading Comprehension:
For reading comprehension I am using History and Science comprehension pages for students. I am working with Mr. Shubert with regard to the science topics. The comprehension work my students will complete weekly will relate to the science topics Mr. Shubert is teaching. For example, we will spend first quarter on "Life Science", second quarter we will begin "Earth Science" and we will move to "Physical Science" third quarter. Fourth quarter I will mix it up for the kids.
I firmly believe that if we must work on reading comprehension, it only makes sense to read about the things we are studying rather then unrelated topics. Students will be learning all about comprehension and moving away from "learning to read" and moving toward "reading to learn" . Students will learn how to utilize prior knowledge, make self to world, self to text, visualize, infer and multiple other strategies for better comprehension. There will not be homework for this as it will all be done in class.
If you have questions regarding this please don't hesitate to contact myself or Mr. Shubert.

In addition to the Science and History topics for reading to learn (aka Reading Comprehension), I also teach students specific strategies on how to make comprehension easier. I spend one week on each of the 6 specific strategies, and then we repeat them all year. By the end of the year the students have spent approximately 5 weeks on each strategy.
* Reading for Details
* Reading for the Main Ideas
* Drawing Conclusions from Text
* Learning how to use Inference
* Using Context Clues
* Finding the Author's Purpose
All of this work is done in class in the student's ELA Composition Books which will be collected weekly to ensure student's classroom participation. The ELA Composition Book will become a useful tool for students to refer back to when doing any kind of reading/writing throughout this year.

Finally, I teach students additional Comprehension skills through the "Close Reading" comprehension activities. The idea behind these activities is to:
* Help students develop comprehension skills through close reading of literature and informational texts.
* Answer questions that accompany each passage students read relating to
* Theme/message
* Text structure
* Tone/voice
* Character
* Word choice
* Craft/technique
* Point of view
